ปี พ.ศ.๒๑๓๕ มีศึกยุทธหัตถีครั้งสุดท้ายเกิดขึ้นในแผ่นดินอโยธยา ชัยชนะครั้งนั้นของสมเด็จพระนเรศวร มีความสำคัญยิ่ง เพราะหากไม่ชนะ นั่นหมายถึงแผ่นดินนี้ ไม่มีเอกราช

แล้วการศึกครั้งนั้น เกิดขึ้นที่ไหน เมื่อ ๔๒๘ ปีก่อน ก็ต้องตามหา "เจดีย์ยุทธหัตถี" ที่พระนเรศมีรับสั่งให้สร้างไว้

แต่เจดีย์ที่สร้างขึ้น ถูกทอดทิ้งอยู่ในป่าเป็นเวลาหลายร้อยปี หลับตานึกสภาพเมื่อ ๔๐๐ กว่าปีนั้น มีแต่ป่าเขา หนองบึง และลานกว้าง ไม่มีถนนทอดยาว หรือหมุดหมายใดๆเป็นหลักบอกไว้

มีความพยายามตามหา เจดีย์ยุทธหัตถี มาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ โดยสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ

จนในสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๖ หลวงประเสริฐอักษรนิติ นำสมุดเก่าเล่มหนึ่งมาถวายกรมพระยาดำรงฯ ได้มาจากยายแก่คนหนึ่ง กำลังนำกระดาษเก่าๆไปเผาในกระชุ

เมื่อเปิดดูจึงเห็นบันทึกเหตุการณ์สำคัญในประวัติศาสตร์ไว้มากมาย รวมถึงระบุว่า ศึกยุทธหัตถีมีขึ้นที่หนองสาหร่าย

จึงให้พระยาสุพรรณบุรีไปค้นหาเจดีย์ที่สุพรรณบุรี จนเจออยู่ในป่าทึบ รัชกาลที่ ๖ เสด็จไปทรงทำพิธบวงสรวง วันที่ ๒๐ มกราคม ๒๔๕๖

รัชกาลที่ ๙ เสด็จไปทรงเปิดพระบรมราชานุสาวรีย์ วันที่ ๒๕ มกราคม ๒๕๐๒ ตามที่รายการ LINEกนก นำเสนอไปในอาทิตย์ที่แล้ว

จนปี พ.ศ.๒๕๑๕ หนังสือพิมพ์ลงข่าวกันเกียวกราวว่า พบเจดีย์ยุทธหัตถี องค์จริงอยู่ที่ ต.ดอนเจดีย์ อ.พนมทวน จ.กาญจนบุรี

และที่พนมทวน ก็มีหนองสาหร่าย มีตะพังตรุ หนองสาหร่ายที่พนมทวน ห่างจากองค์เจดีย์ที่พนมทวนราว ๑๐ กว่ากิโลเมตร เป็นไปได้ที่ช้างทรงของพระนเรศ จะตกมัน ได้กลิ่นช้างของพระมหาอุปราชา จึงวิ่งมาชนช้างกันตรงนี้
